Why a elbow MRI?

Elbow pain rarely settles itself when it has been there for months. The common diagnoses — tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, ulnar collateral ligament injury, distal biceps tendon tears — all involve soft tissue that X-rays simply cannot show.

MRI is the imaging test that confirms what is actually going on, lets you target treatment, and helps you avoid wasted months of guessing.

What a elbow MRI shows

  • Common extensor and common flexor tendons (the origins of tennis and golfer's elbow)
  • Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and radial collateral ligament
  • Distal biceps and triceps tendons
  • Articular cartilage of the humerus, radius and ulna
  • Bone marrow — useful for stress injury and bone bruising
  • Ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel
  • Any joint effusion, loose bodies or synovial thickening

Conditions diagnosed

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) — tendinopathy and tearing at the common extensor origin
  • Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) — common flexor tendinopathy and tearing
  • UCL injury — important in throwing athletes, racquet players and after dislocation
  • Loose bodies — bony or cartilaginous fragments within the joint
  • Joint effusion and synovitis — including post-traumatic and inflammatory causes
  • Distal biceps tendon tears — partial and full-thickness ruptures
  • Osteochondral injury — including osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum
  • Ulnar neuropathy at the cubital tunnel — where MRI is indicated

Every scan is reported by a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist through TMC, the same reporting partner used by more than 50 NHS hospitals.

Your scan, step by step

  1. Arrival. Strive Health Club in St Peter, easy parking, ten minutes from St Helier.
  2. Safety screening. Brief questionnaire covering implants, pacemakers, pregnancy and prior surgery.
  3. Positioning. You sit in a reclining chair with your elbow inside the open C-shaped scanner. The magnet is small and open — most people find it noticeably easier than a closed tunnel MRI.
  4. Scanning. Typical elbow MRI takes 25–35 minutes. Ear protection provided.
  5. Aftercare. None. You can drive away immediately.
  6. Report. Images and TMC consultant report normally delivered within 3–5 working days.

Who refers patients for a elbow MRI

  • Jersey GPs
  • Chartered physiotherapists, including the Strive team
  • Sports therapists, osteopaths and chiropractors
  • Orthopaedic and upper-limb consultants
  • Sports medicine and rheumatology specialists

Self-referral is also welcome — you do not need a referral letter to book.

Elbow MRI Jersey — frequently asked questions

My tennis elbow has lasted six months. Is an MRI worth it?

Yes. MRI distinguishes tendinopathy from a partial or full tear at the common extensor origin, which changes the treatment pathway — for example, whether a steroid or PRP injection is appropriate, or whether a tear needs surgical opinion.

Will the scan show ulnar nerve problems?

MRI can show structural causes of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow — such as a ganglion, anatomical variant or compressive lesion. Nerve conduction studies are the test of choice for confirming nerve function.

Can MRI diagnose a UCL injury without arthroscopy?

Yes. MRI is the standard non-invasive test for UCL injury. In throwing athletes, MRI arthrography is sometimes preferred — your referrer can advise.

How long does an elbow MRI take?

25–35 minutes in the scanner. Allow 45 minutes in total.

Will I need to remove my watch and jewellery?

Yes — all metal, jewellery, watches and electronics need to come off before the scan. You will be given somewhere safe to store them.
