Pre-authorisation — read this first
Almost every UK private medical insurer requires pre-authorisation before an MRI scan. This is not something we can do on your behalf. The insurer needs to hear from you, the policyholder.
A typical pre-auth call to your insurer takes about ten minutes and covers:
- Your policy number and personal details
- The clinical reason for the scan
- The name of the referrer (this can be a physio, GP, sports therapist or consultant — many policies accept self-referral, some do not)
- The provider — MRI Jersey
- The scan — a single-joint MRI of the relevant joint (knee, ankle, wrist or elbow)
The insurer will issue a pre-authorisation number. Please have that number with you at your appointment so we can include it on your invoice.
How the process works
- Confirm cover — call your insurer with the details above and ask them to pre-authorise a single-joint MRI at MRI Jersey.
- Book your scan — once you have your authorisation number, book via the form or by phone.
- Attend your appointment — bring your insurance card or membership number, and the pre-authorisation reference.
- We bill or invoice — depending on your insurer, we will invoice them directly, or you will pay £295 on the day and submit the receipt for reimbursement.
What is not covered by insurance
A small minority of policies have an excess (a fixed amount you pay before the insurer pays the rest), or only cover scans referred by a consultant rather than a physio or GP. If there is a shortfall, you pay the difference directly, and we provide an itemised receipt. The headline £295 price applies whether you pay directly or through insurance.
Self-pay is often easier
Because our price is fixed at £295, many patients with high excesses simply self-pay. It is often quicker than going through pre-authorisation, and the cost rarely comes out very different once an excess is factored in. The choice is yours — we are happy either way.
