Built for joints

The Technology

An open-design MRI scanner — quieter than a standard tunnel scanner, comfortable for patients who feel claustrophobic, and purpose-built for the joints we scan.

  1. No tunnel, no claustrophobia.

The C-shaped open scanner means only the limb being scanned enters the machine — you sit or lie comfortably the whole time.

  2. Quieter than a hospital scanner.

Significantly less noise during the scan, with no headphones required for most patients.

  3. Purpose-built for joints.

Optimised specifically for the joints we scan, producing crisp diagnostic images of soft tissue, ligaments and cartilage.

Before you book

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know before you book.

How quickly can I get a scan?
Appointments are typically available within the same week. For urgent cases we can usually fit you in within 48 hours.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer for any of our scans. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first so the report goes to someone who can guide your next step.
How do I book an appointment?
Book online via the appointment form, by phone on 07797 723353, or by email to info@mriscanjersey.co.uk. A team member responds the same working day to confirm your slot.
How much does a scan cost?
Single-joint scans start from £295. Pricing is transparent and there are no hidden costs. See the pricing page for full details.
Do you accept private medical insurance?
Yes. We work with major UK insurers including AXA PPP, Bupa, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Allianz and CIGNA. Pre-authorisation is required — contact us with your policy details first.
Can I book on behalf of someone else?
Yes. We need the patient's full name, date of birth, contact details and a brief description of the area to be scanned. The patient must consent to the scan on the day.
How long does a scan take?
A single-joint scan takes around 30 to 45 minutes. You will be in the clinic for approximately one hour in total, including check-in and post-scan.
Will I feel claustrophobic?
Our scanner has an open C-shaped design — only the limb being scanned enters the machine. You sit or lie comfortably and can speak to the radiographer throughout. It is well suited for anyone who has found a standard tunnel scanner difficult.
Is the scanner loud?
It is significantly quieter than a hospital tunnel MRI. Most patients do not need headphones.
What areas can you scan?
The extremity scanner is purpose-built for joints. We scan knees, ankles, wrists and elbows. Full-body MRI is not offered here — for spine, head, abdomen or other regions, Jersey General Hospital or a UK clinic is the appropriate option.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing without metal — no zips, buckles, underwire bras or jewellery near the area being scanned. We can provide a gown if needed.
Can I be scanned if I have metal implants or a pacemaker?
It depends on the specific implant or device. Pacemakers, certain aneurysm clips and some metallic foreign bodies can be unsafe in an MRI. Please contact us before booking and we will check your case with the radiographer.
Is MRI safe during pregnancy?
There is no known harm, but as a precaution we usually avoid MRI in the first trimester unless clinically essential. Please flag pregnancy at booking so we can discuss it with you.
Are there any side effects?
MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves — no ionising radiation. The only common observation is mild warmth in the scanned area, which is normal and resolves immediately.
How quickly will I get my results?
A consultant musculoskeletal radiologist reports on every scan, usually within 72 hours (two working days). The report is sent securely to you and to any clinician you nominate.
Who reports on my scan?
Reports are produced by TMC, an independent teleradiology partner that reports for 50+ NHS hospitals and a further 100 facilities across Sweden and Denmark. Every scan is read by a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist.
Can the report be sent to my physiotherapist or consultant?
Yes. Provide their name and email at booking and we will send the report to them as well as to you.
What if the scan finds something serious?
The radiologist flags urgent findings on the report and we contact you directly. We will help you route the result to your GP or a consultant in Jersey or the UK as quickly as possible.
What's the difference between you and Jersey General Hospital?
The General offers full-body MRI on the public list and is the right place for complex or non-joint imaging. We specialise in faster private musculoskeletal scans for the four joints listed above — no waitlist and no flight to the UK.
Should I get an MRI or an X-ray?
X-ray shows bone well but is poor for soft tissue. MRI is the right choice when ligament, tendon, cartilage or meniscus injury is suspected. If you are not sure, a GP or physiotherapist can advise — or read our article on MRI vs X-ray.
